Why do people like Rolls Royce? How did it achieve its current "eptiome-of-luxury-cars" status?

They like them because they are purely status symbols. But, with the astronomically high price tag comes its perks... I read in a magazine (Heavy Hitters), that it takes 19 hours to hand stitch the steering wheel alone. The engine is absolutely huge, handmade, and is powerful enough to haul a nearly 6000 lb vehicle around all day.

If I had a billion dollars, I'd still never buy one. My garage would be too full of Lambos, Porsches, BMWs, and Ferraris.|||The History of Rolls Royce is fascinating. In a nutshell, they have managed to capture the elegance and grace of Edwardian England and kept it current with the world -- some would call that time the height of the British Empire.

To a lot of Brits it represents what England was and should still be if it wasn't for the Labor Party screwing everything up. In England, Tories drive Rolls while Labor drive Jaguar.

In fact, the history of the "Flying Lady" (the Rolls Royce hood ornament) is a good story in itself with the model for it being a secret lover on one of the founders son's.|||Hand-Made

Huge V12 engines.

More luxury than any other car in the world.

Main competitors are Bently and Maybach.|||Rolls-Royce is dead. Only the name remains. The cars are now just upscale BMWs. They even use BMW engines and incorporate a version of BMWs stupid iDrive ................ and that's a damned shame.

And Rolls-Royce' twin, the Bentley is now being built by Volkwagen.

Sixty years ago these two fine companies were building machines to fend off the Germans and now they are both owned by German companies.
